When UV is the right tool
UV inactivates bacteria and viruses but does not remove dissolved salts, iron, hardness or chemicals. It suits low-TDS water with a microbiological problem.

Particles shield bacteria from the UV light. Always fit a 5-micron sediment filter before the UV chamber. Turbidity should ideally be below 1 NTU.
Maintenance
Clean the quartz sleeve every few months and replace the lamp every year, even if it still lights up. Test the water after the UV twice a year for coliform and E. coli.
Common questions
Does UV leave any residual protection?
No. Unlike chlorine, UV does not protect water after it leaves the chamber, so keep downstream tanks and pipes clean.
Is UV enough for borewell water?
Only if the lab report shows low TDS, hardness and iron. Otherwise you need RO or other treatment first.
