Water softeners for hard water: bathroom and whole-house options

White marks on taps and tiles, soap that will not lather, and geysers that scale up within a year are all signs of hard water. A softener fixes these problems. A drinking water purifier does not, and the reverse is also true.

How hard is hard?
IS 10500 sets 200 mg/l total hardness as acceptable and 600 mg/l as the maximum permissible for drinking water. Above about 150–200 mg/l you will start to see scale. A hardness test kit or a lab test gives you the number you need to size a softener.
Bathroom softener or whole-house?
A bathroom softener treats one bathroom line: cheaper, and it fixes the hair, skin and tile problem. A whole-house softener sits after the main tank and protects every geyser, washing machine and tap in the house.

Ion-exchange softeners regenerate with common salt, so you need to refill salt regularly. Softened water has more sodium, so keep your RO purifier on a separate line for drinking.
Common questions
Will a softener reduce TDS?
No. It swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, so TDS stays about the same. Only RO reduces TDS.
Do salt-free magnetic or electronic conditioners work?
Evidence for them is mixed. For proven scale reduction, ion-exchange softening is the established method.
