Yellow or muddy borewell water? Whole-house iron and sediment filters

By Sadguru Research & Analysis Laboratory · 23 October 2026

Water that comes out clear but turns yellow in a bucket, or leaves orange-brown stains on tiles and clothes, almost always contains dissolved iron. Muddy water is a sediment problem. They need different fixes, so test before you buy.

Iron: the numbers

IS 10500 sets 1.0 mg/l as the limit for iron in drinking water. Iron above about 0.3 mg/l already stains sanitaryware and clothes and gives a metallic taste. A lab test for iron, manganese and turbidity tells you which treatment you need.

Sediment: stop it at the inlet

Sand, silt and rust flakes can be caught by a whole-house sediment or UF filter on the line from the overhead tank. This protects geysers, purifiers and washing machines and keeps every tap clearer.

Whole-house sediment pre-filter

iSpring WSP-50 Spin-Down Sediment Filter

Catches sand, rust flakes and silt at the main inlet; flush it with the valve instead of replacing cartridges.

Lab note: Removes particles, not dissolved iron. Dissolved iron needs oxidation and a media filter.

Imported listing: check the plug type and voltage (India uses 230 V) before ordering.

Whole-house UF filter for overhead tank

IONIX 4-Stage Washable UF Tank Filter

Filters water going from the overhead tank to the whole house, reducing muddy and rusty water at every tap.

Lab note: Back-wash regularly; a UF filter does not reduce dissolved salts or hardness.

Dissolved iron needs oxidation

A sediment filter will not remove dissolved iron. That needs oxidation (aeration or chlorination) followed by a media filter, sized to your iron level and daily water use. Ask a water treatment installer, and bring your lab report.

Common questions

Is iron in water harmful?

At the levels found in most borewells it is mainly an aesthetic problem (taste, stains), but it encourages iron bacteria and clogs purifiers.

Will my RO purifier remove iron?

Small amounts, yes, but high iron fouls the RO membrane quickly. Treat iron before the purifier.

Test before you spend

A laboratory report tells you exactly what your water or food needs, so you buy the right equipment once. We test water to IS 10500 and food to FSSAI standards, with sample pickup across Kolkata.
