Smart, alkaline and hot-water purifiers: what you are paying for

Premium purifiers now come with apps, adaptive filtration, alkaline cartridges and hot-water taps. Some of these are useful; some are mostly marketing. Here is our honest take.

TDS-adaptive filtration, which avoids over-purifying low-TDS municipal water. Filter-life tracking and leak alerts. Preset volume dispensing. Hot water on tap, for households with infants or elderly members.

Alkaline cartridges raise pH a little by adding minerals. They do no harm, but drinking water only needs to be within pH 6.5–8.5, and health claims about alkaline water are not well supported. Copper stages add trace copper, which is fine within the IS 10500 limit.

Sensors drift. Test the output yourself with a TDS meter every month and get a lab test once a year to confirm the purifier is doing what the app says.
Common questions
Is alkaline water better for health?
There is no strong evidence that drinking alkaline water improves health. Safe, clean water within the normal pH range is what matters.
Is hot water from the purifier sterile?
Hot is not the same as boiled. For infant formula, follow your paediatrician’s advice on boiling water.
