Compound microscopes for college labs and food microbiology

By Sadguru Research & Analysis Laboratory · 23 October 2026

A good compound microscope opens up microbiology: yeast in batter, moulds on bread, and stained bacteria. Here is what to look for in a microscope that will last a student or teaching lab for years.

Magnification and optics

To see bacteria you need about 1000× total magnification, using a 100× oil-immersion objective, and staining such as Gram stain. Glass optics and a metal body matter far more than headline numbers like "2500×".

Monocular or binocular?

Monocular models are lighter and cheaper, fine for students. Binocular heads are far more comfortable for long sessions in teaching and pathology-style labs.

Microscopy versus lab testing

A microscope shows what is there, not how many or which species. Food safety decisions need culture-based counts (TPC, coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella) from a testing laboratory.

Common questions

Can I see bacteria at 400×?

Only as tiny dots. For useful detail you need 1000× with oil immersion and staining.

LED or halogen illumination?

LED runs cooler, lasts longer and is the better choice for most users.

Test before you spend

A laboratory report tells you exactly what your water or food needs, so you buy the right equipment once. We test water to IS 10500 and food to FSSAI standards, with sample pickup across Kolkata.
