Dishwashers for Indian kitchens: hygiene, hard water and what to buy

By Sadguru Research & Analysis Laboratory · 23 October 2026

Dishwashers wash at much higher temperatures than hands can tolerate and dry utensils completely. That makes them more hygienic than a damp sponge and a drying rack, as long as you set them up for your water.

Why they are more hygienic

Hot wash and rinse cycles (often 60–70 °C) and full drying leave fewer bacteria on plates than hand washing with a sponge, which itself carries large bacterial loads.

Hard water matters

Hard water leaves white spots and scale on utensils and the machine. Set the hardness level in the dishwasher menu using a hardness test result, and use dishwasher salt in the softener compartment.

Indian utensils

Kadhais, tawas and pressure cookers fit in 12–13 place models. Scrape off food, soak burnt vessels briefly, and use an intensive programme for oily loads.

Common questions

Does a dishwasher use a lot of water?

Modern dishwashers typically use less water than washing the same load by hand under a running tap.

Can I wash non-stick and wooden items?

Check the manufacturer’s label; wooden spoons and some non-stick pans are best washed by hand.

Test before you spend
